Power BI: Analyze in Excel
In this session, we will walk through the reporting capabilities made possible through Analyze in Excel, an oft-overlooked but invaluable feature of Power BI. The session will answer the questions: What is Analyze in Excel? Why use Analyze in Excel? How can I use Analyze in Excel? Learn why leveraging this tool actually expands the role of Power BI in an organization, rather than diminishing it.

Back to the Past! Travel with me on an adventure back in time… in your Power BI report!
What do you do when a user asks to see a report backdated in time? If the current month is August 2019 but they want to see the report backdated to June 2018, how do you accomplish this in Power BI?

This session will show you a technique where users select a single Year-Month as the report end date, and your report visuals backdate automatically without having to change DAX measures. This technique can be applied to most date (month) based visuals including showing the Last X Months (rolling 12 months), Year-to-Date sums, Calendar Year-to-Date Month totals, and Multi-Year totals.

This technique is advanced as it uses a combination of DAX, new tables linked to a Calendar table and relationships needed between the tables.

Come and learn this solution! Your users will thank you!

Introduction to the Concepts of Data Modeling
Many users of Power BI come to the tool from Excel which means that they are not familiar with one of the key concepts of PBI: data modeling. This session will introduce data modeling using analogies with Excel. We will investigate star schemas, dimensions and fact tables. We will discuss the dos and dont's of data modeling, always referring to common sense guidelines. Participants with no experience in data modeling but lots of experience in Excel are the perfect audience for this session. It is deliberately conducted in layman's terms.
And if you want to continue your data modeling journey, there is an advanced data modeling session you can attend the very next day!

The Future of Applied Data in Business
Data is everywhere and, increasingly, seems as though there is nothing we don't measure. If we discover something we aren't currently measuring, we quickly figure out how to, and usually, the results end up online.
Much of this data ends up being public in one way or another, especially if it is data collected by government agencies. We want to discuss and showcase some of the implications of this, and demonstrate how Data Science and something as seemingly innocuous as historical weather data can be used to grab useful and meaningful data for business analytics. With a little creativity, pretty much any data can end up being a potent resource for modern business at any scale.

DAX and Filter Context - Seeing the right data
This session will demystify DAX Filter Context, which determines what portion of your data model a calculation has access to and how you can ensure you have the right data and an accurate result. We'll start with some groundwork on the key concepts involved with DAX, the data formula language used by Power BI and Excel's PowerPivot, including the difference between Row and Filter context, and when you use CALCULATE. We'll spend the bulk of the session with examples of how filters are working, how to modify filters to act on subsets of supersets of your data, and how you can use virtual tables and variables to modify your context. If time allows, we can slip in some DAX editor hotkeys everyone can use whenever they edit DAX to save themselves time and aggravation!

How to Talk About Your Product or Service so that Clients Want to Buy and Investors Want to Invest
As a product or service owner, you need to be able to talk to more than just the 1s and 0s of your product or service. You need to be able to talk about your product or service in a way that your potential clients and investors can easily relate to, can quickly visualize how it will change their lives and are enthusiastic to buy or invest.  Being able to tell the right story for your potential clients and investors is the key to getting them to take action.  Unfortunately, most of us aren't sure how to craft a story about our product or service that isn't just all about the data, aren't sure how to structure our talk to inspire our audience to action and aren't sure how to stop from overwhelming our audience.  After this talk, you will have a storytelling structure and formula that makes clients want to buy and investors want to invest even if you have never sold before.
